2 Better Boy Tomato plants, 1 Grape Tomato plant.....I thought I bought BIG boy, but read the tag wrong. Now I don't have a clue what a "Better Boy" is....
I also planted a cucumber plant.
And 2 Bell Pepper plants
Let me say, when I started, that soil was so dry and hot, it was like sand. I gave it a really good soaking. I decided to wait until this morning to plant the seeds I bought, because the soaking may have washed the seeds away. I was glad I waited. This morning that moist soil was full of big fat earth worms. Perfect!! I let them know I was grateful they came to do their job! I planted 2 three foot long rows of lettuce....
......and 2 rows of onions. I could not find onion sets ANYWHERE. I guess I was too late.
So it is all in and ready to deliver some wonderful salads to our dinner table this summer.
What will I get if I take care of it properly and become a REAL gardener???
Sweetheart will extend the garden out to where the lattice ends.....that will make my garden 14' 3" by 10' 10". BIG difference. I am already planning it all out. I know I will want a raspberry bush in there!!!
Other than that, I am staying inside. It has been record breaking heat here the last couple of days. I am doing laundry and hand quilting this afternoon. I was able to sit out on the back deck and read my Bible with a cup of coffee before it got too bad out there. I love Proverbs....you just know God has some wit about Him.
Sassy is staying cool too. She sits at the window when we are all outside and meows.....I am not sure any noise comes out, because she does her "silent cry" when she wants something. Full fledged meow, but no sound.
She is such a dolly. For someone who is not a "cat person" I sure am crazy about her!
Thanks for visiting. I am off to switch the laundry around and grab my quilting!

I'm not a gardener, but I'll cheer you on with your gardening efforts. Good luck and keep weeding.
Bren, you are ahead of me. LOL I bought 6 tomato plants Saturday, but it is still too wet to till. We have had lots of rain. I figure as long as I get the garden planted by early June, it should do ok. You can do this. Work a few minutes in it during the evening or early morning when it is cool. I have had Better Boy tomatoes. They are great, good flavor and size. I bought Big Beef. About all they had for me to choose from this late. LOL Callie meow is pretty much silent too, but not Aeris. Sassy looks content. Have a great day. Winona
Your garden looks wonderful! I'll be cheering you on as the summer heat gets hotter.
So glad you're going to be able to sit and quilt today. That sounds just about perfect.
God bless you - Julie
You will do fine. The weather is unbearable, but the perfect time to get stuff in the ground. Remember to water. Chris
I'm like you - I would love to HAVE a garden and a beautiful yard, but I don't want to do all that work! LOL I wish you success with your garden this year!
Oh, how sweet a garden start. Just remember, Bren ... fertilize every week on the same day ... you'll have produce out the gazoo!
I love gardening ...
Have a lovely week.

Baby that earth needs mulch add straw around the plants to keep the moisture in. Straw is cheep here, pine needles there? It needs to have some peat perhaps to absorb the water and hold it. Sand just drains so fast. peat is a must for root veggies.
I'm a wanna be qardener too. I haven't planted even a flower seed yet but hope to get to it this weekend...weather permitting. I may have to come to your house in the middle of the night and "borrow" some veggies if I don't get my act together LOL.

Pretty soon you'll have so many tomatoes you will be emailing me for canning recipes! Hope all goes well and the weather cooperates and you end up with a beautiful garden!
blessings,
Niki
You say your soil is like sand. Ours is red clay and sticks to everything. I should have taken a photo Saturday after we finished planting around the little pond. Every time we plant, we're adding sand and potting mix plus mulch so hopefully in the future the soil will be easier to work with.
Good luck with the garden. As soon as the plants are large enough, maybe you could add some pine needles. This will keep weeding to a minimum.
